Repair relining instead of complete replacement: when partial refurbishment pays off

Wear is rarely evenly distributed — frequently only 20 to 30 per cent of the lining has reached the end of its service life. A blanket complete relining pays more than necessary.

Complete replacement or repair relining? On industrial furnaces this question often decides five-figure sums. From more than 500 refractory projects we know that wear is rarely evenly distributed. Frequently only 20–30 % of the lining has reached the end of its service life — the rest is still sound. A blanket complete relining therefore pays for material and downtime that would not be necessary.

What matters for the economical solution

  • Targeted repair relining: strip out and reline only the damaged zones — this significantly reduces material and labour input.
  • Hot repair: where the unit allows it, we repair while it is still hot. That saves the most expensive hours of a shutdown — complete cooling and restarting are not needed.
  • Act ahead of time: an early partial repair extends the campaign life and defers the major relining to the next shutdown that is planned anyway.

The basis for every recommendation is an honest condition assessment — including thermography and documentation. Because not every damaged spot is suitable for a partial repair. The decision to repair or replace should be based on data, not on routine.
