Refractory construction for Steel plant – primary metallurgy

Primary metallurgy imposes the most extreme conditions on refractory materials: temperatures above 1,800 °C, chemically aggressive slags and enormous thermomechanical loading. SBS Refractory Service has extensive experience in the refractory lining and maintenance of steel plant units — from the electric arc furnace and the LD converter through to the coke oven battery.

Our specialists know the specific requirements of every unit and use state-of-the-art materials such as MgO-C bricks, carbon blocks and ceramic welding techniques. We work with the highest precision under extreme conditions — on schedule and to the strictest safety standards.

Whether a major project such as a complete blast furnace relining or a local repair on the electric arc furnace: we take on full project responsibility.

Typical challenges

01

Extremely high temperatures of well over 2,000 °C in the blast furnace

02

Aggressive FeO-bearing slags in the converter and the electric arc furnace

03

Alternating thermomechanical loading during cyclic melting processes

04

Gas exposure and explosive reactions during the oxygen refining process

05

Strict safety requirements for work in a high-risk environment
