SBS Refractory Service

Complete relining at an energy provider's waste-to-energy plant

One overhaul window, one combustion chamber, one fixed end date

Plant:Waste-to-energy plant
Location:Nuremberg area
Service:Refractory relining of the combustion chamber
Industry:Energy supply / waste recovery
Project overview

Initial situation

A major energy provider near Nuremberg operates a waste-to-energy plant whose combustion chamber lining had reached the end of its service life. The relining had to be completed entirely within the scheduled shutdown – in waste incineration this window is fixed, because the plant is a scheduled part of the regional waste management chain and any overrun cannot be absorbed elsewhere.

Scope of services

  • Assignment and sequence planning before the shutdown began
  • Demolition of the worn existing lining
  • Scaffolding and section-by-section brickwork of the combustion chamber
  • Removal and proper disposal of the demolition material
  • Handover for restart within the scheduled window

Challenges

The task

The overhaul window was fixed and left no buffer for rework

The combustion chamber had to be scaffolded over its full height, with several trades working in parallel

The brickwork required consistent joint quality across large wall areas throughout

Demolition material and new material had to be moved while the neighbouring plants remained in operation

Our solution

The SBS approach

We planned the entire assignment before the shutdown began: material call-off, scaffolding, staffing and the sequence of wall sections were fixed before the first brick was moved.

The brickwork proceeded section by section from bottom to top, so scaffolding levels could be cleared and repositioned for the next section without interrupting the flow of work.

Our own installation teams carried out both demolition and relining. This kept responsibility for quality and schedule in one place, with no coordination losses between subcontractors.
