Initial situation

SBS Refractory Service was commissioned to carry out extensive preventive maintenance work on an 18 MW wood combustion plant. The plant generates heat and electricity from wood fuels and is run in continuous operation. The routine shutdown covered the complete inspection and overhaul of the refractory lining in order to ensure operational reliability and efficiency for the coming operating period.

Scope of services

  • Renewal of 6–8 worn sections of the lining

Challenges

The task

The 18 MW plant required a systematic survey of all refractory-lined areas including the gas duct

Several sections of the lining showed advanced wear and had to be renewed within the limited shutdown period

The intermediate arch required repair at 12 rings – work that demands the utmost care during dismantling and reassembly

All work had to be completed within the planned shutdown window so as not to delay the restart of operations

Our solution

The SBS approach

Maintenance began with a thorough cleaning of the entire furnace including the gas duct. All deposits and residues from the combustion process were removed so that the condition of the lining could be assessed precisely.

Based on the inspection, 6 to 8 sections of the lining were identified as requiring renewal and were professionally replaced. On the intermediate arch, 12 rings were renewed, being carefully dismantled and rebuilt to size with new bricks.

Finally, the entire refractory lining received maintenance gunning, which acts as an additional protective layer, extending the service life of the lining and reducing wear in the coming operating period.
