Initial situation
A circular furnace lining supports itself through the ring: every brick supports its neighbours. This only works as long as the ring is closed and sits true. In September 2026, SBS Refractory Service built the bricked lining of a shaft in a lime works.

The task
A ring that stands on cut filler pieces is the first to open up
The brickwork expands during heat-up — if it sits tight against the steel, it pushes itself apart
Small deviations in the starting ring grow over the height into visible offset
The SBS approach
The brick division was calculated for each diameter. The compensation is distributed around the ring instead of being concentrated in one place.
An annular gap remains between the brickwork and the furnace shell. The anchors on the steel shell are fitted with expansion caps.
The starting ring was surveyed in, not simply started — what is one millimetre out at the bottom would show up twenty courses higher as visible offset.

Why a round ring has to be calculated.
In a shaft there is no flat surface. Every course has its own diameter and therefore its own brick count. Whatever is left over when dividing is spread across the whole ring instead of collected as a cut piece in one place — a ring standing on cut pieces is the first to open up.
