Relining of a chip melting furnace in aluminium recycling

Freshly lined: the chip melting furnace of an aluminium wheel manufacturer, completely relined.

Furnace type:Chip melting furnace
Industry:Aluminium recycling / wheel manufacturing
Service:Complete relining
Construction method:Monolithic, zone-specific
Project overview

Initial situation

Chip melting furnaces are among the most demanding units in aluminium recycling. The feed material from wheel machining has a large surface area and brings in oxide, oil and moisture. The furnace of an aluminium wheel manufacturer was due for a complete relining – from dismantling the old lining to documented handover.

Scope of services

  • Dismantling of the old lining
  • Corundum-repellent special mixes in the melting area
  • Zone-specific design of hearth, melting bridge, charging shaft and door
  • Monolithic, low-joint surface
  • Controlled dry-out and sintering
  • Documented handover

Challenges

The task

Hard corundum growth caused by the exothermic oxidation of the chip feed material

Large surface area of the material, introducing oxide, oil and moisture

Differing loads on hearth, melting bridge, charging shaft and door area

Infiltration and build-up at open joints

Our solution

The SBS approach

Corundum-repellent, non-wetting special mixes prevent the melt from growing through the pores and bursting the structure apart

Zone-specific design of hearth, melting bridge, charging shaft and door area – with material, density and expansion joints matched to each

A monolithic, dense surface without open joints minimises infiltration and build-up

Controlled heat-up with dry-out and sintering via defined holding stages
