SBS Refractory Service

Aluminium melting furnace back in operation after relining

An evenly glowing melting furnace is the best proof of a clean refractory lining.

Furnace type:Aluminium melting furnace (converter)
Industry:Secondary aluminium
Service:Refractory lining by our own installation teams
Execution:February 2026
Project overview

Initial situation

The converter of a secondary aluminium plant was due for refractory lining. Melting units in the aluminium sector place particular demands on the lining: molten aluminium attacks it differently from slag, and charging cold scrap subjects it to sudden loads. The lining was installed by our own installation teams, without subcontractors.

Scope of services

  • Refractory lining of the melting chamber
  • Zone-specific material selection for hearth, walls, arch and burner area
  • Non-wetting mixes in the bath line
  • Controlled first heat-up with holding stages
  • Documentation of material batches, positions and the heat-up curve

Challenges

The task

The bath line as the most heavily loaded zone – molten aluminium must not penetrate and corundum build-up must not clog the cross-section

Thermal shock from charging cold scrap into the hot furnace

Differing loads on hearth, walls, arch and burner area

First heat-up without steam pressure and cracking in the fresh lining

Our solution

The SBS approach

Non-wetting, corundum-repellent mixes in the bath line

Material selection with sufficient thermal shock resistance to prevent spalling

Zone-specific material selection instead of a one-size-fits-all compromise – each zone receives the appropriate material

Controlled first heat-up with holding stages

Complete documentation of material batches, positions and the heat-up curve as a basis for the next shutdown
