Furnace maintenance at a light-alloy wheel forging plant

Three furnaces overhauled at a renowned wheel forging plant

Location:Medebach
Customer industry:Light-alloy wheel forging / automotive
Furnace types:1 chip melting furnace, 2 ingot furnaces
Areas:Furnace floor, melting bridge, beams
Project overview

Initial situation

A renowned light-alloy wheel forging plant in Medebach commissioned SBS Refractory Service with maintenance and servicing work on three industrial furnaces. The chip melting furnace and two ingot furnaces showed operational wear on the furnace floor, melting bridge and beams that called for a professional overhaul. The work had to be planned so that the interruption to production was kept to a minimum.

Scope of services

  • Thorough cleaning of all three industrial furnaces
  • Detailed inspection and determination of the repair requirements
  • Partial repair of the chip melting furnace (floor, melting bridge, beams)
  • Partial repairs on two ingot furnaces
  • Work carried out in parallel to minimise the overall duration
  • On-schedule handover of all plants to production

Challenges

The task

Three furnaces had to be overhauled in a coordinated and efficient manner within a limited time window

On the chip melting furnace, the wear on the floor and melting bridge called for particularly careful repair, as these areas are exposed to high mechanical and thermal loads

The ingot furnaces showed different wear patterns requiring individual repair approaches

As a producing automotive supplier foundry, the requirements for punctuality and quality were particularly high

Our solution

The SBS approach

Our team began with a thorough cleaning of all three furnaces and carried out detailed inspections in parallel to determine the exact repair requirements. On the chip melting furnace, the work focused on the partial repair of the furnace floor, the melting bridge and the load-bearing beams.

On the two ingot furnaces, targeted partial repairs were carried out in the identified wear areas. Working on all three units in parallel avoided waiting times and significantly shortened the overall duration of the overhaul.

All work was completed precisely, reliably and on schedule. The plants were optimally prepared for continued operation and were able to return to production immediately after acceptance.
