Initial situation

The furnace hood of an aluminium melting furnace was due for refractory lining. The hood closes off the furnace chamber at the top and is exposed to radiant heat, thermal cycling and attack by aluminium vapours. A dense, crack-resistant lining is what determines heat losses and service life here.
