Refractory Materials
From the fireclay brick to high-tech refractory castables – an overview of the key refractory materials in industrial furnace construction.
Refractory Bricks
Fireclay bricks
up to 1,400 °CThe classic in refractory construction. Versatile in use for standard applications in chamber furnaces, tunnel kilns and combustion chambers.
- Good thermal shock resistance
- Cost-effective
- Easy to work with
High-alumina bricks (Al₂O₃)
up to 1,800 °CFor the highest temperatures and chemically loaded areas. The higher the Al₂O₃ content, the more resistant the brick.
- High compressive strength
- Chemically resistant
- Long service life
Corundum & chrome corundum bricks
up to 1,900 °CPremium materials for extreme stress: slag contact, aggressive atmospheres and the highest temperatures.
- Extreme resistance
- Slag-resistant
- For special applications
SiC bricks (silicon carbide)
up to 1,600 °CExcellent for wear protection and areas with high abrasion loads. Very good thermal conductivity.
- High abrasion resistance
- Good thermal conductivity
- Alkali-resistant
Refractory Castables & Mixes
Refractory castable (conventional)
up to 1,600 °CCast or gunned refractory castables for complex geometries and large-area linings.
- Flexible in shape
- Quick to install
- Good adhesion
Low-cement castable (LCC)
up to 1,700 °CHigh-strength refractory castables with reduced cement content for improved high-temperature properties.
- High strength
- Low porosity
- Long service life
Ramming mixes
up to 1,800 °CDry-rammed mixes for furnace hearths, launders and crucibles. Compacted by ramming or vibration.
- Joint-free installation
- High density
- Suitable for melt contact
Gunning mixes
up to 1,700 °CMachine-applied refractory mixes for rapid repairs and areas that are difficult to access.
- Rapid repair
- Good adhesion
- Reduced downtime
Mortars & Adhesives
Refractory mortar
up to 1,600 °CFor laying refractory bricks. Thin-bed mortar for narrow joints, thick-bed mortar for levelling.
- Matched to temperature
- Thin-bed or thick-bed
- Standard-compliant
Refractory adhesive
up to 1,400 °CFor bonding ceramic fibre modules, boards and shaped parts to steel or brick substrates.
- Immediate adhesion
- For fibre materials
- Simple application
