Furnace lid repair with fibre modules
Ceramic fibre modules for maximum efficiency and durability

Initial situation
After many years in service, the lid of an industrial furnace was showing clear signs of wear on its refractory lining. The existing insulation had increasingly lost its effect, leading to higher heat losses across the lid area and a measurable rise in energy consumption. A conventional repair with a dense brick lining would have meant a long shutdown and considerable weight on the lid structure. The customer was looking for a modern, efficient alternative.
Scope of services
- Condition assessment of the existing lid lining
- Complete dismantling of the degraded old lining
- Inspection and renewal of the anchoring system
- Installation of the ceramic fibre modules using the plug-in system
- Quality control of the gap-free installation
- Acceptance and handover to the operator
Project data
The task
The existing insulation had degraded over a large area and had to be completely dismantled
By design, the furnace lid is exposed to a particularly high thermal load because heat rises
The dead weight of the new lining had to be considerably lower than that of the old dense brick solution so as not to overload the lid structure
Installation time was to be kept as short as possible in order to minimise the interruption to production
The SBS approach
After analysing the requirements, our team recommended using ceramic fibre modules as a modern alternative to the classic dense brick lining. Fibre modules offer excellent insulation values at a fraction of the weight and, thanks to their modular plug-in system, can be installed considerably faster.
The old lining was removed completely and the anchoring system on the lid was inspected and renewed where necessary. The fibre modules were then fitted precisely onto the existing anchors and installed at the correct density and orientation. Gap-free installation ensures an even insulating effect across the entire lid surface.
The fast installation of the modules considerably shortened the shutdown compared with a conventional repair. The new fibre modules also offer significantly better thermal shock resistance than the previous solution.
